Orthodontic Treatment Procedure:
1. Make an appointment to see a dentist specializing in orthodontics to undergo a thorough diagnosis in order to come up with a treatment plan. During this stage, detailed information about orthodontics for patient to consider in making decisions to do orthodontic treatment.
The dentist will examine the teeth to see if the patient’ dental issues can be resolved with orthodontic treatment or not. The dentist will then take impression and model of patient’s teeth. A full mouth x-ray and pictures of the face will also be taken to see a clear overview of the mouth to be used for planning the orthodontic treatment.
2. Before installing braces, the patient’s teeth must undergo general dental treatment, such as, scaling, filling, tooth extraction, root canal treatment or wisdom tooth removal, in order to achieve good oral and dental health before attaching braces. If this step is not done before putting the braces, it will be more difficult to do these treatment later and if not done, there will be a bigger risk of developing tooth decay, and gingivitis during orthodontic treatment.
3. Next, the braces will be attached to the patient’s teeth. This is a painless procedure; however, due to the tightening of the braces, the patient will feel slight to moderate pain and tension, because the orthodontic device will gradually move or pull the teeth to the teeth’s correct position. The dentist will also advice patient to take painkillers to alleviate the pain.
4. Once the braces are attached, patient should strictly maintenance good oral hygiene. Follow the advice of the orthodontist of brushing and flossing correctly and consistently, as well as follow strictly what is prohibited while undergoing orthodontic treatment to achieve successful result.
5. An appointment is also scheduled to adjust the appliance periodically. Each of the orthodontic tools will have different appointments, generally 1 time per month. Scheduled appointments must be strictly met by patient to make sure the treatment plan is followed and get the best results.
6. In addition to scheduled appointments for braces adjustments, it is also necessary to make appointments regular dental check-ups, cleaning and scaling every 6 months to prevent gum disease formation during orthodontics.
7. After removing the braces, the patient should wear retainers continuously for a period according to the dentist’s instructions to prevent teeth from shifting back to its pre-brace condition, until teeth is used to its new and corrected position.
